BIO
Alicia Escamilla is a Mexican interdisciplinary artist, designer, and scholar based in Brooklyn, New York since 2024.
Trained initially as an architect, her work explores the notion of inhabiting across three interconnected scales: mind, body, and world, considering how perception and memory shape these dimensions and participate in the formation of identity.
Drawing on diverse materials and approaches—including writing, drawing, photo-manipulation, fiber, sculpture, tattooing, performance, installation, and sound—she creates works that invite reflection on the ways we inhabit spaces, environments, and ourselves.
Escamilla holds a Ph.D. in Design and Urban Studies and a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) in Mexico City, where her research focused on soundscapes and land art, respectively. Her architectural training and sustained inquiry into inhabiting led her to expand into multiple artistic media through a self-directed practice.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in Mexico, Argentina, Germany, Greece, and the United States. She co-produced her two solo exhibitions—Rhymes, Arrhythmias, Eurythmy: Prelude to a Self-Dwelling (2024) and Seedscapes: Growing Between Circles (2023)—at AMA Showroom in Puebla, Mexico.
She was a 2023 Summer Resident Fellow at the Institute for Public Architecture on Governors Island and previously participated in the Art Omi Architecture Residency in 2019.
